MIT Green Building Education Signage Guidelines and Templates

Green Building Education enhances the sustainable design and construction of new spaces, by inviting and empowering building occupants to play a role in meeting the sustainability goals of the MIT campus. The signage is an important reminder of MIT’s commitment to the environment and wellbeing - as it is seen by MIT students, staff, and faculty, as well as parents, visitors, prospective students, and more every day.

The purpose of this document is to provide clear guidelines for project teams to implement consistent and flexible educational signage that meets the requirements of building certifications, such as LEED and Fitwel. These signage guidelines are flexible enough to allow for different spatial constraints and unique qualities of each project, and are consistent enough to be recognizable across MIT buildings as a “common language.”

These guidelines were developed collaboratively by MIT’s System Performance and Turnover (Campus Construction) and Office of Sustainability teams and have been tested in several pilot projects across campus, to help ensure an efficient design and installation process.
