Climate Action

As a research institution at the frontier of science and technology in one of the world’s most dynamic innovation districts, MIT is uniquely suited to tackle the complex, interdisciplinary nature of climate challenges at the global scale, but also in our own backyard. MIT is investigating global solutions and testing local strategies.

MIT’s Plan for Action on Climate Change and Fast Forward: MIT's Climate Action Plan for the Decade have catalyzed MIT research, teaching, and campus operations to accelerate the Institute’s contributions. Such actions aim to protect our campus – and the world – from the extraordinary risks associated with rising global temperatures.

Fast Forward, MIT's most recent plan, outlines several campus commitments structured around mitigation and resiliency, greenhouse gas emissions accounting, electrical vehicle fleet expansion and infrastructure, and climate leadership. The Office of Sustainability serves as the organizational leader for these commitments

Climate change mitigation initiatives at MIT

  • The Climate Project at MIT is committed to research, develop, deploy, and scale up serious solutions to address the tremendous challenges of climate change, focusing on six broad climate-related areas.
  • The MIT Climate Portal highlights MIT’s latest climate change research and initiatives for action and helps you ask your questions of experts.
  • Nested in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Course 1-12 is Bachelor of Science in Climate System Science and Engineering, designed to combine “scientific understanding of the earth’s systems with engineering skills.”
  • Developed by the Environmental Solutions Initiative, the Environment & Sustainability Minor is designed to address both people and the planet in an integrated manner.
  • The Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy aims to produce leading-edge research to help guide societal transitions toward a more sustainable future.
  • The goal of the Climate CoLab is to harness the collective intelligence of thousands of people from all around the world to address global climate change.
