Janka Hamori is a driven and passionate sophomore studying computer science and economics, with a minor in sustainability. She is deeply committed to making a positive impact on the world, especially in the realm of climate change. Janka is particularly interested in the intersection of environmental policy, economics, and computer science, and is actively engaged in climate change-related clubs. Janka joined MITOS to work on evaluating the new food waste pilot in East Campus, an undergraduate dorm, as well as to provide new tools for analyzing the food waste at MIT. In her free time, Janka serves as the co-leader of the MIT Undergraduate Association Sustainability Initiative's Thrift Committee, where she works to organize thrift shops for the entire MIT community. She is also part of the Waste Watchers, a member of a coed fraternity, and has played volleyball for over a decade.

What interested you about the Climate Action Student Research position with MITOS?
One of my main interests is climate action and I have been involved with different sustainability groups on campus since I started studying at MIT. It came naturally that I wanted to explore climate action research options on campus, and the topic I can focus on with MITOS—food waste solutions—seemed the perfect fit for me. I have long been following MITOS’s work, so getting an opportunity with MITOS was on my bucket list for a while.

What is your specific topic of focus in this role? Why is that topic of interest or important to you?
This IAP I have been focused on documenting the best recycling practices at East Campus, as well as helping with the planned pilot Food Waste Recycling Program at East Campus. As an East Campus resident and Waste Watchers dorm lead of the dorm, it was important for me to make sure (even though the dorm will be shut down for the next two years for renovations) that our legacy in the field of reusing and recycling will have an impact on the student life of other dorms as well going forward.

What has been the most interesting finding or favorite experience in this role?
My favorite experience has been being able to work with amazing people, and getting a behind-the-scenes peek into how climate action planning at MIT works on different levels.

How does the work of this role tie into your coursework?
I am an Environment and Sustainability minor, so this position has been an opportunity for me to explore real-life work related to it. In the future I hope to tie my work at MITOS with my major as well, using my data science skills to enhance my impact on the campus.
