As a full cohort of students and staff return to campus, food will likely play a role in welcoming the MIT community back to campus. In anticipation of shared campus food experiences this academic year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the challenges and opportunities in our food system as well as the people and dishes that got us through the past year.

MIT's operational staff are key partners to MITOS and in reaching MIT's climate goals. To highlight this, we will be featuring the contributions of one staff member each issue.

With a focus on designing solution scenarios for MIT for the short and long term, Solving for Carbon Neutrality at MIT, led by instructors Julie Newman (Director of Sustainability and DUSP lecturer) and Tim Gutowski (Professor of Mechanical Engineering), engages students in project-based learning with the campus as a test bed for ideas.

In the fall of 2020, a joint effort from MIT Dining, Recycling and Materials Management, and student organizations UA Sustain and Waste Watchers gave students the chance to opt in to receive a free set of reusable utensils.

Grace is a Master of Engineering student in the Power Electronics Research Group working to improve the efficiency of a power generation system while also pursuing the Sustainability Certificate from the Sloan School of Management.

Piero Orderique is an undergraduate student from Peru and a Climate Resiliency Fellow at the MIT Office of Sustainability.

Diane Zhang is the Data-Driven Sustainability Reporting Student Fellow and a sophomore at MIT majoring in Computer Science and Molecular Biology with a Spanish minor on the pre-medicine track.
