See yourself as part of the solution at "Junk" event

"Junk" is part of the MIT Museum's After Dark series. Cohosted by the MIT Office of Sustainability on Thursday, November 14th from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

See Yourself as Part of the Solution is a collaborative exhibit for MIT Museum’s November 14 After Dark event, running from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Guests are invited to browse thought-provoking creative displays sponsored by the MIT Office of Sustainability in partnership with Ishani Saraf, Assistant Professor, MIT Program in Science, Technology, and Society, and Chris Rabe of the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.

metal. 

 

Browse through a collection of photographs from a market in India where discarded machines are disassembled to become reusable parts and raw material. You are invited to caption these images to reflect collectively on the entangled lives of people and machines.

 

Appreciate a montage of discarded or lost metal pieces collected on the beaches of Winthrop, MA, including the former site of Paul Revere's copper smelter and a conceptual artist display representing the stages of a computer's environmental impacts. 

 

Learn from the case study From Mining to E-waste: The Environmental and Climate Justice Implications of the Electronics Hardware Life Cycle created by a cohort from The Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing (SERC) program of the Swartzman College of Computing. The study explores the impacts of the global electronics hardware life cycle using environmental justice and climate justice as key frameworks.
