Solar EV Recharging Station

In order for an EV to realize lifecycle benefits in emissions the electricity that powers the car must be emission-free as well. A canopy of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules covering the area of one parking space might be enough to power the drive home. PV panels might be used on the hood, trunk or roof of the car to provide auxiliary power.

Blended Electric Storage Strategy

In order to enable fast charging, some of the storage capacity in the electric vehicle battery pack might be replaced with capacitors. This can increase efficiency in fast charge or discharge modes of use. Due to the scope this is better suited for a senior design thesis but smaller portions may be taken on as part of a class project or UROP.

Electric Bicycle

An electric bicycle project is a great way for a few students to learn the basics of electric propulsion systems. This type of project might be the focus of one or more UROP students with guidance from more experienced members of the team.

Campus Energy Audit

Description: Analyze drawings and analyze HVAC in buildings to find inefficiencies. The temperature on campus can vary greatly around campus due to very different types of heating systems. In some areas there is lack of control over the heat which results in wasteful use of windows to control temperature. Previous auditing group was run by Walt Henry and students. Outputs of this project may include recommendations to MIT for the highest leverage low cost retrofits to save on energy costs and power plant requirements.
